The Difference a Door Makes

In my door series I am always showing beautifully carved wood doors that are everywhere in Torino and Piemonte. Spending time in Rapallo and Liguria, I am noticing that almost none of the doors are carved wood but instead use stones or are painted with incredible tromp l'oeil artwork. Why have wood or marble that will be worn down by time and salty sea air when you can just paint on any extravagant detail you want. Let me show you a few examples of what I've seen around town.
Notice the painted scroll and corner "stone" work on this one.
All of the architectural details on these building are painted on, even some of the shutters and windows are fake. I love it.
