What to Have When There is No Starbucks

There is no Starbucks in Italy, really don’t need it, but if you crave something fancy as I do, there is the Bicerin. Bicerin is a hot coffee drink made of espresso, chocolate and whole milk. It is made in layers, chocolate on the bottom, then espresso and milk on top (see photo). It became fashionable in the 18th century where it was a favorite drink of Alexandre Dumas and Puccini. It was invented here in Torino and is still made the same way and in the exact same cafe it was invented in, Al Bicerin. A stroll along the River Po (see photo) is best finished off with a bicerin. They go together like, well.., like coffee and chocolate.
